Titan’s ten-foot tall exterior is crafted from Zimbabwe black granite, one is of Earth’s darkest and oldest stones, contrasted with inner faces of custom acrylic with one-way mirror coating. The mirror becomes backlit as the sun sets, giving the work an ethereal nocturnal glow.
Titan is named both for Saturn’s largest moon, on which Nasa’s Cassini spacecraft discovered monumental dust storms, and for the mythological pre-Olympian gods who ritualistically covered themselves in white dust.
As with my other works, Titan’s materiality forces an acknowledgement of the enormity of time and humanity’s fleeting presence in the universe. The granite used dates back 500 million years and will last many millions more.
While iterations of the form have been with me for several years, the final design and fabrication came together only in the last six weeks. I drove the components from New York and assembled the 2000 lb slabs in the 100-degree desert using only human power.
